The Grove, Ngunnawal
Located on the site of the former Gold Creek Homestead and farm, this development sought to echo the historical qualities of the site and Canberra’s unique urban form, with a main entry axis terminating in a verdant community courtyard, framed by a clubhouse building effectively split into two pavilions.
The urban layout provided for a loop road feeding a series of courts, responding to a successful model whereby the courts effectively become small sub-communities of 8 to 10 homes, fostering an overall community coherence and sense of ownership of the shared open spaces. These courts are frequently provided with intimate pedestrian pathways back to the central community facilities, encouraging walking and casual interaction between residents.
The villas are designed with deep verandahs and generous garden spaces, but are also provided with intimate private courtyards, some with aspects to the surrounding landscape. The entry road is deliberately designed to reduce the visual impact of cars, with rear access allowing the creation of a classic Canberra Avenue drawing visitors towards the community hub.
