Walsh Street, South Yarra - Residence
252 Walsh Street reflects the qualities of South Yarra- a diverse, complex but coherent urban environment containing some of Melbourne’s most notable residences. Bridging from large nineteenth century terraces, Victorian mansions and fine interwar mansion apartments and dwellings, large parts of the suburb are intact due to well enforced heritage overlays and height controls.
The site of the house was a rare larger allotment, subdivided into two sites, one developed for a boutique apartment building of three residences, the other an individual house.
The house is remarkable: the upper two levels are designed like open loggias, with bifolding facades opening onto large balconies and terraces at each end. A height control resulted in the rear part of the house being set down significantly- this presented an option to create a massive rooftop garden, seamlessly connected to the adjoining living areas. A spacious stair links all four levels of the house, with the basement containing a vaulted cellar and cinema.
