RMIT Building 8
RMIT had selected architects Edmond and Corrigan, better known for smaller scale work, to undertake this large project. However the University identified the need to partner this practice with one practice experienced in dealing with large, technically complex projects. Demaine Partnership proved to a be a logical choice. Building 8 posed a series of interesting technical challenges. A new building had to be constructed over the top of an existing structure, which had already shown signs of load failure. The solution implemented a unique light-weight granite curtain wall façade which minimised weight. Although no manufacturer had such a ready made system, Demaines experience in curtain wall detailing initiated a new process to achieve the desired result. A major achievement during construction was to maintain full operation of the student union facilities. The result was that the existing building functions continued without any major interruption during the length construction period.
