Trawalla Avenue, Toorak
This project is set within a challenging environment, with a 10 storey brick apartment tower dating from the 1970s on one side, and smaller scale apartments to the other. The site was occupied by a large residence dating from the 1920s. The brief was for the construction of a 4 storey residential building, containing high quality and spacious apartments. The design solution seeks to mediate the scale of the adjoining structures to give some level of urban coherence to this urban environment. The use of a strongly expressed roof form allows the penthouse level to be effectively screened from the street, and deep loggia below the eave level articulate and soften the façade, while providing outstanding outdoor living space opening from the adjoining sitting rooms. Traditional detail, such as the stone façade, expressed timber eaves, fine moulded cornices and detailed ironwork, allow the building to project a rich character. This is reinforced by generous provisions for the Paul Bangay designed landscape.
Only 11 apartments are offered, with a particularly outstanding penthouse apartment occupying the full footprint of the upper level. Many apartments will enjoy views towards Melbourne’s city skyline.
