Copelen Street, South Yarra
The brief for 11 Copelen Street was to create a design which is both timeless and striking, setting a benchmark of quality in this exclusive area. The architect's vision for 11 Copelen Street captures a European design sensibility with a contemporary perspective. Characteristic of southern French design are the deep colonnades that provide indoor to outdoor spatial transitions also highly appropriate for the temperate Australian climate, while providing level of privacy and softening the crisp geometry of the building exterior. The interiors are informed by French practice, with sharp definition of forms and edges typical of the best early twentieth century design practice, a period defined by French practitioners in all areas of design from Chanel to Chareau. This is not, however, a cold minimal interior, but one enriched by touches of refined detail, natural materials including high quality stones and timbers, and a discriminating selection of fittings and equipment.
