Stonington, Malvern
Stonington Mansion is one of Victoria’s most significant residences. Originally built for the Victoria’s first transport magnate, the owner of Cobb and Co., the mansion later had a role in the foundation of Australia’s current federation. It served as the temporary Victorian Government House, when the current government house was in use as the home of Australia’s Governor General. The property subsequently went through a range of changes, including intensive development as Victoria State College, later Deakin University. A number of large structures were positioned adjacent to the Mansion for teaching purposes. In 2007, the campus was sold and Demaine Partnership were part of a team responsible for a development proposal for incorporation of residential uses on the site. Demaine designed a new 4 level apartment building adjacent to the Mansion, and a number of compact apartment buildings, the Somers Avenue Residences, designed to resemble individual houses, along the perimeter street frontages of the site. These designs were subjected to an intensive approvals process, including separate approvals by Heritage Victoria and the local authority. The apartments will set benchmarks in quality in this area, with four large residences per level over 3 levels, and 2 individual penthouses above. The Somers Avenue Residence feature one apartment per floor, with 5 individual buildings containing 2 and 3 storeys.
