Alexandra Avenue, South Yarra
The brief for 97 Alexandra Avenue was to create a design which is both timeless and striking, exploiting the outstanding location on bluff overlooking the Yarra and the city skyline. The architects have responded to the elevation of the site, creating a flowing design that appears to float over a rustic stone base with deep, visually dramatic open cantilevered balconies, curved to present the optimum aspect to the views.
The flowing form hints at the best of French Deco design of the interwar period, but reinterpreted with a distinctly contemporary perspective.Characteristic of French design are the horizontal lines that are carried through in all details, from the flowing balconies, the detailing of the internal panelling, and even the ribbed details of the external fascias.
The interior palette is further informed by French practice, with sharp definition of forms and edges typical of the deco style, but with a contemporary neutrality and simplicity. This results in an interior receptive to both contemporary or more traditional furnishing: apartments of great flexibility and functionality and a warm, receptive character, enriched by touches of refined detail, natural materials including high quality stones and timbers, and a discriminating selection of fittings and equipment.
