NGUIU SPORTS
COMPLEX, COMMUNITY CENTRE AND MUSEUM
Nguiu is located on Bathurst
Island, in the Tiwi Islands complex. This proposal for a new
facility celebrates the unique culture of the indigenous people of
the area, while providing new Community facilities, a sports
complex including change rooms, clubrooms and a grandstand, and a
Museum complex containing a shop and library facilities.
The sports facilities will allow
the Tiwi Bombers football team to host home games as part of the
Northern Territory Australian Football League, boosting the local
economy and reinforcing the Bombers recent inclusion in the League.
The associated Cultural and Community spaces provide much
needed facilities for the local community.
The Tiwi Islands is associated
with a long history of sporting success in Australian Rules
Football, with such well known players as Maurice Rioli (Richmond)
and Michael Long (Essendon) coming from this area. A Hall of
Fame celebrates the success of these players and others, and this
double height space leads on axis to the recently refurbished Nguiu
oval, flanked by the entrances to the adjoining Cultural Museum and
Community Hall. These spaces are in turn overlooked by
flexible community meeting spaces, a cafe and the clubrooms of the
Tiwi Bombers.
