LIFE SAVING
VICTORIA STATE CENTRE
The Surf Life Saving Victoria State Centre is a sophisticated
integrated administration, education and emergency service facility
located in an environmentally sensitive setting on Port Phillip
Bay.
The building acts as a training centre for members of affiliated
clubs, most of which are located beyond the Port Philip heads.
However the members of these clubs predominantly reside in
Melbourne, and the State Centre is a vital metropolitan resource in
ensuring that these volunteers are able to maintain a high skills
base.
In addition, the State Centre provides an ongoing resource in
providing schools training in Life Saving skills, not only at the
waterside but where ever resucitation skills may be required. A
lecture theatre, training rooms, storage for life saving and water
safety equipment, a gym and direct access to Sandridge beach all
facilitate delivery of these programs.
The building is also innovative in integrating a significant
education facility within a sensitive foreshore setting. Sand
embankments help embed the building form in its environment, and
allow landscaping to be extended to the boundaries of the building.
The curved plan form minimizes the buildings apparent bulk.
