NATIONAL
GOLF CLUB: CLUBHOUSE CONVERSION
Located on the Mornington
Peninsula, the National Golf Club has undergone rapid expansion,
driven by some of Victoria's most spectacular and challenging
courses. There are superb vistas to Westernport Bay across the
rolling topography that characterizes this area, however these were
only partially exploited by the design of the original Golf
Clubhouse, built in the 1980s. This building was quickly superceded
by a new building in a comtemporary style, built nearby to cope
with a burgeoning membership. The club needed to find a new role
for the earlier structure, without compromising the values and
character of the courses so valued by the membership. After
initial, more intensive development proposals were rejected, the
Board appointed Stephen Akehurst and Demaine Partnership to look at
a proposal to effectively recycle the existing building to
accommodate 12 upmarket residences, with the ambience and character
of a traditional lodge. The proposal obtained Town Planning and
member approval.
