109 Caroline Street is located at the crest of a hill, in one of
South Yarra's finest streets. The surrounding area is notable for
its array of fine period homes and apartment buildings. These
apartments had become 'tired'. Dated floor plan layouts provided no
private open space or secure storage. Access to the penthouse was
via an external stair, and living areas oriented on the south, away
from northern views and sunlight.
The renovation transformed the building. It provided the
penthouse with a spectacular new internal stair, and opened up a
range of new, private external courtyards for the lower level
apartments. The interiors were upgraded in a style sympathetic to
the art deco character of the building.
