RMIT
PRINTING SCHOOL BUILDING
The RMIT Printing facility at
Brunswick is a 3,000 sqm academic and technical facility for the
faculty of art, design and communication.
The initial client brief to
retain, restore and add to an existing two storey brick building on
the site . However careful analysis showed that the cost of
achieving the demanding technical requirements of the brief within
the existing building envelope brief exceeded the cost of a new
building. What was initially envisaged as a refurbishment became a
new purpose built facility for printing training at no additional
cost. The cost effectiveness of the solution was reflected in the
$1,040/m2 building construction cost.
The building embodies careful
consideration of thermal loads, utilizing motorized blinds to
control solar gain and using the sloping clear glazing to generate
convective ventilation effects.
A concrete and steel framed
structure is faced with carefully selected cladding materials,
including tinted and clear framed and planar glazing systems, white
quartz precast concrete panels and standing seamed steel sheet
.
